Kangana Ranaut Says ‘MP Salary Not Enough to Run Home’ After Becoming Member of Parliament

Bollywood actress turned MP Kangana Ranaut has once again created a stir in the corridors of politics with her outspoken statements. Kangana, who became a BJP MP from the Mandi seat in Himachal Pradesh in 2024, has recently described politics as a "very expensive hobby" in an interview. Her statement comes at a time when just a few days ago, she had said that after becoming an MP, people are coming to her with "panchayat level problems", which she is not happy with.

"Politics is a hobby, not a profession."

In an interview with the media, Kangana said, "I always say that politics is a very expensive hobby. If you are an honest person, you cannot see it as a profession because you need another job to run your life." Kangana believes that the salary received as an MP (about ₹ 1.24 lakh per month) is not enough to meet the needs of the house. She said that after paying the salary of staff like the driver, cook, the MP is left with only ₹ 50-60 thousand.

"Area visits count in the millions."

Talking about her parliamentary constituency, Mandi, Kangana said, "If I go to any area and travel with staff, the expenses run into lakhs. Because every place is 300-400 km away." She also said that many MPs in Parliament do business or are lawyers, so that they can meet their expenses.

Was there any expectation of a ministerial position?

When Kangana was asked if she expected to get a place in the cabinet, she said, "I come from a successful career - I am a filmmaker, writer, and Padma Shri recipient. I contributed a lot to the party and won the election in a difficult seat. I thought I would definitely get a ministry." According to Kangana, her achievements and experience were worthy of getting a place in the cabinet.

Had declared assets worth ₹91.5 crore

During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Kangana declared assets worth ₹ 91.5 crore, which (Kangana Ranaut net worth) includes movable assets worth ₹ 28.7 crore and immovable assets worth ₹ 62.9 crore. Despite this, she described the post of MP as a "loss deal" from the financial point of view. Kangana also mentioned former Rajya Sabha MP Javed Akhtar and said, "People who came before me, like Javed Akhtar ji, they also kept doing their work. You have to work."
